Smashing Pumpkins’ ‘Siamese Dream’: 10 Things You Didn’t Know. Nirvana-induced angst, epic beefs with indie-rock royalty and other trivia surrounding the band’s 1993 alt-rock landmark. A quarter-century later, the tension still lingers. Not surprisingly, songs from the 1993 album make up a healthy portion of the set. What better moment, then, for 10 tantalizing facts you might not know about this expectation-defying classic? 1. A nervous breakdown and an intraband breakup set the stage for the album. Corgan had a nervous breakdown just before making Siamese Dream.
The sessions for their sophomore effort, Siamese Dream, were wrought with friction - Corgan eventually played almost all the instruments himself (except for percussion). Some say strife and tension produces the best music, and it certainly helped make Siamese Dream one of the finest alt-rock albums of all time
This sophomore album was the breakthrough for Smashing Pumpkins, though it was uncertain whether they'd be able to continue. And though Billy later admitted he was unhappy with how Siamese Dream had turned out, he came pretty close. Like the Cure's Pornography, Siamese Dream proved that the best music can still be made while going insane. Siamese Dream is like Billy Corgan's diary of all his relationships in the past two years. And it's not your usual diary where a casual entry would be: Dear Diary, the people at school are meanies and I hate them. The chicken was good.
While The Smashing Pumpkins most popular early singles tend to feature distorted guitars and driving drum patterns – which is why they are frequently associated with the grunge and alternative scenes – closer inspection quickly reveals much more complex approaches to song-writing, instrumentation and recording. Where many of the genres’ major acts tend towards simple power chords and repetitive song structures, The Smashing Pumpkins chose to go with more variety. The final single for Siamese Dream was Disarm, and it is fairly distinct from the rest of the album. It features soaring cello and violin, with timpani rather than standard drums. Lyrics such as Cut that little child and The killer in me is the killer in you led to controversy, including a banning by the BBC. The second half of the album did not produce any singles, but the quality is just as high as the first half.
Genre: Alternative Rock. Siamese Dream is a record that is very 90's, it reeks of that 90's alt rock sound and that's kind of it's charm. This record feels like a time capsule the songs all have this very nostalgic feel you can pick up on your first listen. Billy's poetic Dylanesque lyrics evoke something.
