Mamma Mia! (promoted as Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus' Mamma Mia!) is a jukebox musical written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, based on the story of Bueno Sera, Mrs Campbell, written by Dennis Norden, and based on the songs of ABBA, composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, former members of the band. The title of the musical is taken from the group's 1975 chart-topper "Mamma Mia".
Göran Bror Benny Andersson (Swedish pronunciation: (listen); born 16 December 1946) is a Swedish musician, composer, member of the Swedish music group ABBA, and co-composer of the musicals Chess, Kristina från Duvemåla, and Mamma Mia!. For the 2008 film version of Mamma Mia! and its 2018 sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, he worked also as an executive producer. Since 2001, he has been active with his own band Benny Anderssons orkester.
The album includes three songs from ABBA's 1977 tour mini-musical The Girl with the Golden Hair performed during each of their European and Australian shows in 1977. Andersson and Ulvaeus wanted to offer more than "a run through of their hits and assorted album tracks" for their concerts. Although the songs received a s" reception during the first performances of the mini-musical, three of the tracks ("Thank You for the Music", "I'm a Marionette", and "I Wonder (Departure)" were included on. the new album Side one. Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus remember writing and recording 'Mamma Mia'. Well, Andersson - the composer in the partnership - does. Ulvaeus, who came up with the lyrics, is less sure. Abba became one of the biggest bands in the world - their career total album sales to date are somewhere north of 360 million. But by the early Eighties, the cracks were showing, personally and professionally. Why the Abba musical is a smash. Abba were the soundtrack to my tortured adolescence. Like most disaffected teens, when life got too hard, I simply turned the volume up. Because Abba are survivor camp - more poignant than any Gloria Gaynor anthem. And now a whole new generation is about to be seduced, with summer blockbuster Mamma Mia! based on the hit West End show. The genius of the film is that British producer Judy Craymer hasn't sold out to Hollywood.
MAMMA MIA!’s Creator Judy Craymer tells how this magnificent record-breaking musical first triumphed In London and then conquered the World. As Creative Producer of MAMMA MIA!, my job started long before any script had been written. The story begins more than 25 years ago when I first met Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, the songwriting geniuses behind ABBA
