In this fourth volume of his complete string quintets, La Magnifica Comunità presents the six quintets of Opus 18. As in previous volumes, the ensemble provides a scholarly approach to the performance of Boccherini. The sound is very light and crisp, appropriate for music of that era. Intonation is quite precise, as are articulation and ornamentation. Balance is generally quite good, and the solo cello parts are easily allowed to come to the forefront. Inner voices always have an appropriate presence as well. The result is an album that is at once elegant, charming, and sparkling.
