Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson (born Edward L. Vinson J. December 18, 1917 – July 2, 1988) was an American jump blues, jazz, bebop and R&B alto saxophonist and blues shouter. He was nicknamed Cleanhead after an incident in which his hair was accidentally destroyed by lye contained in a hair straightening product. Music critic Robert Christgau has called Vinson "one of the cleanest-and nastiest-blues voices you'll ever hear.

Etta James (vocals) and Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson (vocals/alto sax) are featured with Red Holloway (alto sax/tenor sax/baritone sax), Jack McDuff (Hammond B-3), Shuggie Otis (guitar), Richard Reid (acoustic bass/bass guitar) and Paul Humphrey (drums). This album was recorded live in May 1986 at Marla's Memory Lane Supper Club in Los Angeles. Since there are sound samples on this page (The Late Show) you can run through those to get a tantalizing taste of the music. Those samples will not convey the overall feel of this album, which requires a listen to all of the tracks, but you will get the gist of it. What keeps me coming back is the recording quality and performance itself make me feel as though it's May 30, 1986 and I am in the audience at Marla's Memory Lane Supper Club in Los Angeles. If you are an Etta James fan this is an essential album. One person found this helpful.
