Rival Sons is an American rock band from Long Beach, California. Formed in 2009 from the ashes of Scott Holiday’s previous band The Black Summer Crush that featured vocalist Thomas Flowers (Oleander), Michael Miley, and Robin Everhart. Rival Sons was born when Jay Buchanan was persuaded to try playing rock'n'roll and re-record ‘Before The Fire’.

Rival Sons formed in Long Beach where Jay Buchanan and Michael Miley lived. Prior to the formation of Rival Sons, Jay Buchanan recorded as a solo artist and with his Buchanan band. He independently released All Understood in 2004 and True Love EP in 2006. Scott Holiday had been active in many bands including Human Lab who were signed to Atlantic Records which he then subsequently left and formed a band called Black Summer Crush. Rival Sons was the first rock band Jay had performed with so he initially was skeptical and made it a side project. Yet Jay was impressed by the reaction and success the new band received with their debut album Before the Fire (2009) and committed full-time. Jack Rivera of the Huffington Post declared them A rock band to watch.
