Journey Through the Past. But the soundtrack to Neil Young's fantasy/documentary Journey Through the Past, released as a double-LP six months before the movie was seen by the public, does contain an audio record of what's on screen. Songs are cut off or fade out, to be replaced by fragments of something else, and the sound is not improved. When Young uses footage from television appearances by Buffalo Springfield, you hear them in tinny mono sound, and in what sounds like canned versions of the original recordings with some guitar playing and vocals done live. And when Young intercuts a band rehearsal of his. Neil Young's year of looking back. by Steven Hyden on October 30, 2012. Until recently, he was ravenously combing through contemporary culture for fresh material: His 2006 album-cum-blog-post Living With War was his political record, 2009’s Fork in the Road his electric car record, and 2010’s Le Noise his political record with Daniel Lanois’s weird, pseudo-chillwave production record. 1 In 2012, however, Young has not only stopped looking forward, he’s hinted that his personal history now represents a longer (and perhaps more creatively fruitful) stretch of road for him to travel down

Neil Percival Young (born November 12, 1945), is a Canadian singer-songwriter and musician. After embarking on a music career in the 1960s, he moved to Los Angeles, where he formed Buffalo Springfield with Stephen Stills, Richie Furay and others. Young had released two solo albums and three as a member of Buffalo Springfield by the time he joined Crosby, Stills & Nash in 1969

Unfortunately, the album instead pawns itself off as a film soundtrack, although whether the existence of any film could justify the existence of this record is questionable. To be sure, there are selections by the Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young here. The album opens with a hilarious introduction of the group on television that segues into a truncated version of, For What It’s Worth, followed by Mr. Soul, apparently from the same television show; Neil’s driving vocal and guitar work on Mr. Soul possess a vitality almost completely absent from Journey‘s other cuts. Journey Through the Past contains virtually none of those moments. It is the nadir of Neil Young’s recording activity. In This Article: Neil Young. Want more Rolling Stone?
