His new album, You Fucken Sucker, is an uncompromising and overwhelming statement; an uncanny (and sometimes uncomfortable) reflection of our collective mental excess. Presented in the exact sequence in which it was conceived, You Fucken Sucker charts a route of personal tragedy and emotional fatigue, and the loss and eventual retrieval of the illusion of control. Like much of Paul de Jong's work, You Fucken Sucker is a genre unto itself, overflowing with innovative exploration of sounds and senses. Unlike his previous work, it is an unvarnished exposition of his anger, frustration, misery and confusion. Perhaps most vitally, it is an opportunity for the rest of us to experience the kind of communal emotional purge more typical of pre-Internet basement punk rock shows, to bask in the rarified air of being unafraid of being afraid.
On his new solo record, You Fucken Sucker, de Jong returns to this familiar terrain of proggy flourishes, fingerpicked guitar, and unhurried jam sessions woven into intricate electronic mosaics and drifting mood pieces. This should be manna from heaven for Books devotees. But the album suffers from a solipsistic haziness, struggling to maintain that youthful magic. If his duo soundtracked a time of heady self-discovery, Sucker is trapped, years later, in the dull roar of a hangover.

Paul de Jong's second solo album since the breakup of the beloved collage-pop duo the Books is a challenging, cathartic therapy session channeling years of frustration, alienation, confusion, and abuse. The sense of playfulness which was prominent in his earlier work is largely transformed into pitch-black humor, and during some moments, it expresses outright terror. As if the title doesn't tip it off already, there is a whole lot of cursing on this album. Not on every track, mind you, but the ones that do indulge in FCC-unfriendlies tend to go overboard.
It's easy to recognize how this album can be viewed as a reaction to years of accumulated personal issues and traumas, and it's powerful on a certain level, but on the whole, it's just not very easy to listen to or enjoy. Of course, that seems like the entire point.

The Books’ Paul de Jong is releasing a new solo album called You Fucken Sucker this year, one reportedly inspired by societal frustratio. ompounded by a series of unexpected and frightening personal turns. The lead single, It’s Only About Sex, was a twisted and druggy sound collage. Today he’s sharing the title track, which charts quite a different course. The spare and twee You Fucken Sucker comprises nothing but an unnamed woman singing a twisted adaptation of Mary Had A Little Lamb against a backdrop of some warm bass arpeggios and the mildest of ambient keyboard sounds
