The "Priest" They Called Him is a collaboration between the American novelist William S. Burroughs and musician Kurt Cobain. On the piece, Cobain provides noisy, discordant guitar backing based on "Silent Night" and "To Anacreon in Heaven" to Burroughs' deadpan reading.

His first album, "Call Me Burroughs", was comprised of readings from 'The Naked Lunch' and 'Nova Express'. It was initially issued in France prior to appearing on the US avant garde label, ESP. "Ali's Smile", a one-side 12-inch released via Brighton's Unicorn Bookshop, was Burroughs' only other 60s release, although it can be heard on the film soundtrack Chappaqua, and his distinctive voice was sampled in 1971 for Dashiell Hedayat's Obselete. Burroughs was lauded at the Entermedia Theater in 1978 with "The Nova Convention",.

The Boy Scouts of America have faced some deserved criticism, undeserved ridicule, and have been cruelly used as props, but I think it’s safe to say that they still bear a pretty wholesome image for a majority of Americans

He bears the name of both his father and his great grandfather, William Seward Burroughs I, the original inventor of the Burroughs adding machine. He wrote three novels, two of which were published as Speed (1970) and Kentucky Ham (1973)

He’s a fan of William Burroughs’ dense style, and admires the cut-up writing technique he pioneered in the ’40s, calling it revolutionary. Katherine Turman, Smells Lik. irvana. I get that he made an album with Burroughs, and that’s why he’s here. But, if he hadn’t killed himself (or whatever), he would have faded away like most of the grunge acts of the day. Maybe he’d end up like Dave Grohl doing some other band or maybe touring endlessly with Nirvana (with him as the only original member) doing a parade of hits for tired old fake hipsters?

Burroughs' raspy, crackled voice was ideally suited to his surreal cut-and-paste narratives, and while it may be better to read his actual prose, this is an ideal spoken-word collection of his works. Perhaps Burroughs the old raspy-monotoned man, the provocateur, huckster, junkie, experimentalist, or murderer spring to mind first

William S. Novelist, multimedia artist. For the Recor. elected discography. Burroughs is one of the most significant writers of the twentieth century. Books like Naked Lunch, Junky, The Soft Machine, Nova Express, The Ticket that Exploded, Cities of the Red Night, and The Western Lands pushed the form of the novel to its outermost limits and introduced d or taboo themes such as drug addiction, homosexuality, and systems of control. Burroughs ’ first album was a spoken word recording entitled simply Call Me Burroughs. On it he read from Naked Lunch and Nova Express. Unlike his friend Allen Ginsberg, who sang his own and others poems and songs at readings and on several recordings, reading was Burroughs ’ essential modus operandi.
