The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is the debut solo album by American singer and rapper Lauryn Hill. It was released on August 25, 1998, by Ruffhouse Records and Columbia Records. After touring with her former group Fugees, Hill became involved in a romantic relationship with Jamaican entrepreneur Rohan Marley, and shortly after, became pregnant with their child. This pregnancy, as well as other circumstances in her life, inspired Hill to make a solo album.

Hill recorded most of the album at Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong studios in Kingston, Jamaica. At the time, she was romantically involved with Rohan Marley, Bob’s son, and later became pregnant with his child. The album’s lyrics touch on her pregnancy as well as the tensions within the Fugees. The neo-soul record modernized gospel music in the eye of the public, and the candor of its reflection of Hill’s reality and the perspective of a black woman was unprecedented. Sadly her first studio release would also be her last.

At her best Lauryn Hill flirts with legitimate prophet status, digging to her deepest to harness the power greater than herself; a power we all need to survive and overcome. She offers it to us. I’m out here, she seems to say; you can be out here, too. Even though this is when Ms. Hill is technically at her best, these songs don’t comprise the highlights of the album. The heart of Miseducation is too vast, too imperative to find its complete representation in a series of slick punchlines

Lauryn Hill taught me to say everything. My debut album Lizzobangers was my attempt at doing what Lauryn Hill does naturally: rapping, singing, being political. And I have a greater appreciation for The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill now that I’m an adult and can fully comprehend the meaning behind every word. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is a body of art that truly can’t ever be remade. Lauryn has her own unique way of storytelling and capturing every woman’s truth in a matter of minutes. She makes music with purpose that means something.
