Us is the second studio album by American singer-songwriter and producer Empress Of, released on October 19, 2018 via XL Recordings and Terrible Records. The album was preceded by the double A-side single "Trust Me Baby, In Dreams", released on April 11, 2018, and three promotional singles: "When I'm with Him", released on August 22; "Love for Me", released on September 24; and "I Don't Even Smoke Weed", released on October 17.
Empress Of is the alias of Lorely Rodriguez. Her debut EP consisted of shimmering synthpop, and now, she's stepping up as an avant-R&B auteur with pop star potential. The bulk of Me forms a concept album of sorts documenting the life cycle of a relationship. She takes us from the sloppy hook-up sex of "Make Up" ("Nothing comes between us/ But a piece of latex/ When you tear my clothes off/ Like I was a paycheck") to the obsessive dependency of "Everything Is You" ("All I want to be is you").
Empress Of’s debut album Me was released almost three years ago, in 2015. So personal, she says, it was difficult to perform. It was, like, every day, just giving myself to the audience, she says. With Us, Rodriguez wanted to facilitate a more equal exchange of energy between herself and her listeners, to create a community. It’s not just love songs. It’s about different experiences of the heart, she says.
That lyric also describes her musical approach to Me – Empress Of is a rule-breaker and a trailblazer. On her debut full-length, she brings together elements of synthpop, dream-pop and even EDM, carving out a niche for herself in an environment where its increasingly hard to sound original. There’s something inherently powerful about a young, female singer creating an entirely self-produced album and Me’s lyrical themes often underline this. On Need Myself Lorely casts off her dependence on a man, asking, Can we stop watching the TV, can I get up off of my knees, and proudly sings of her transition towards autonomy and self-love. It’s a wonderful -patriarchy moment, as is Kitty Kat, her personal you to a catcaller.

Making her full-length debut after a few singles and EPs, Empress Of (the electro-pop solo moniker of Lorely Rodriguez) sounds remarkably assured and self-confident on her first album Me. Previous releases, such as her 2012 debut 7" single "Champagne"/"Don't Tell Me," featured Elizabeth Fraser-like vocals over hazy, downtempo beats in line with much of the other chillwave being produced around that time.
