After taking his early urban folk tales of cars and girls as far as he could on Born to Run, Bruce Springsteen took a long, hard look at the lives of those same Jersey street kids a few years down the line, now saddled with adult responsibilities and realizing that the American Dream was increasingly out of their grasp, on 1978's Darkness. on the Edge of Town, an album that dramatically broadened Springsteen's musical range and lyrical scope.

I come from down in the valley Where, mister, when you're young They bring you up to do like your daddy done Me and Mary we met in high school When she was just seventeen We'd ride out of this valley down to where the fields were green. We'd go down to the river And into the river we'd dive Oh, down to the river we'd ride. Then I got Mary pregnant And man, that was all she wrote And for my nineteenth birthday I got a union card and a wedding coat We went down to the courthouse And the.

Bruce Springsteen to Release Long Awaited 'River' Box Set This December. Unlike Bruce’s previous high points - 1973’s Greetings From Asbury Park, . striving nu-Dylan makes hyper-wordy debut), 1975’s Born to Run (underperforming contender makes last-chance power drive), and 1978’s Darkness on the Edge of Town (pissed-off victim of showbiz malfeasance makes angriest LP yet) - The River. isn’t a turning-point record or a souvenir of some easily recognizable career crossroads. It might also be the wealth of material that causes The River to be overlooked. While The River would’ve been more consistent as The Ties That Bind, the single-disc album Springsteen originally envisioned, the sprawling final product is something more: a summation of everywhere the Boss had been and an indication he wasn’t content to spin his wheels.

The year before, Springsteen recorded it for an album called The Ties That Bind, which he decided not to release. This and six other tracks from that album were included on The River. A long, intense version was featured on the 1999 E Street Band reunion tour. More songs from Bruce Springsteen. More songs that were adapted from country songs. More songs with bodies of water in the title. The best part about that box set is the harmonica being played on The River. Ryan from Warren Ohio,This album changed my life. Just wanted to say that (not that anyone cares). But this song (along with the whole album) makes you think about who you are and what you've done and makes you look through yourself in the mirror. Thank you Bruce! Joe from Philadelphia, PaThe River is about his sister.

Columbia Records released Bruce Springsteen’s ‘The Ties That Bind: The River Collection’ on December 4th, 2015. A comprehensive look at ‘The River’ era, the set contains 52 tracks on 4 CDs with a wealth of unreleased material, and 4 hours of never-before-seen video on 3 DVDs  . The River: Single Album’ is the 10-track album that Springsteen recorded in 1979 as a follow up to 1978’s ‘Darkness On The Edge Of Town’ but never released. The songs lacked the kind of unity and conceptual intensity I liked my music to have.
