Louise Dumont Farrenc was one of the most noted women composers of the 19th-century. These are two truly first-rate piano trios, beautifully performed by Mary Ellen Haupert, piano; Nancy Oliveros, violin, and Laura Sewell, cello. Performer: Mary Ellen Haupert, Laura Sewell, Nancy Oliveros. Composer: Louise Farrenc. Studio noise is present during the performance, most audibly in the finale of the D minor trio. Acoustics are hit and miss. Louise Farrenc (1804-1875) was an outstanding woman composer of the 19th century, in many ways eclipsing Clara Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn. Schumann and Berlioz acknowledged her talent and leading musicians regularly performed her chamber music.

Louise is an opera (roman musical) in four acts by Gustave Charpentier to an original French libretto by the composer, with some contributions by Saint-Pol-Roux, a symbolist poet and inspiration of the surrealists. The opera depicts Parisian working-class life. However the city itself is in many ways the true star of this very atmospheric work – invoked at various points during the opera
