Parkening's impeccable technique, subtle feel, and perfect tone are all on display here; however, it is the sensitivity in his playing that has always separated him from his contemporaries. His performances are always first class, so in recommending one, it is more dependent on the listener's choice of material rather than how they are executed. A wonderful casual listen but also one worthy of intense scrutiny.

Christopher Parkening catapulted to prominence in the late 1960s and became an icon to countless American guitarists across the stylistic spectrum. I vividly recall my impression upon first hearing the Parkening Plays Bach album in 1972. Although I was not playing classical guitar yet, I was immediately struck by Parkening’s absolute control over the formidable technical elements of the music and the emotional drama and passion he seemed to pour into every note. His subsequent albums revealed that it didn’t matter what he played-Handel, Weiss, Ravel, Satie, Albéniz, Ponce, Lauro-the recordings were all consistently alluring. Growing up in Los Angeles, Parkening began playing guitar at 11. On the advice of his uncle, studio guitarist Jack Marshall, his parents bought him a classical guitar and recordings by Segovia. He started taking lessons with Celedonio Romero.

Christopher Parkening (born 14 December 1947) is an American classical guitarist. Parkening was born in Los Angeles, California, and pursued music in part because of his cousin Jack Marshall, a studio musician in the 1960s. Marshall first introduced Parkening to the recordings of Andrés Segovia when he was 11, and encouraged Parkening to begin his guitar studies with classical guitar. By the time he was 19, he had won a number of competitions and was touring and recording extensively.
