First Rays of the New Rising Sun is a compilation album by American rock musician Jimi Hendrix, featuring songs mostly intended for his planned fourth studio album. The 17-track album was one of the first releases overseen by Experience Hendrix, a family company that took over management of his recording legacy. MCA Records released the album in 1997 and it reached the album charts in the United States, United Kingdom, and four other countries.

Instead of assembling the album as Hendrix had envisioned, the material was dashed together by producer Alan Douglas and released on a number of posthumous albums, including The Cry of Love, Rainbow Bridge, War Heroes, Loose Ends and Voodoo Soup. After securing the legal rights to his catalog, a separate attempt was made by The Hendrix Estate in 1997 to re-issue a compilation meant to replicate Hendrix’s wishes for First Rays, but many fans noted that poor song selection and mastering missed the mark as well

question that the songs on this CD were recorded by Jimi Hendrix, even the people who worked on the sides with him can't say which songs would have ended up on the finished version of First Rays of the New Rising Sun (assuming that he even ended up using that title for the album), or what embellishments he would have. added to any of them in the course of completing them, or even if he might not have totally reconsidered such matters as tempo and approach to any of them. And speaking of the guitar, despite the prominence of Hendrix's vocals on a lot of this album, the guitar playing is pretty much up to the standard that one would expect, if not necessarily the final versions of some of the songs.

Sound - 10 Released in 1997, this album is a collection of seventeen Hendrix songs that were originally recorded for his proposed double album sequel to Electric Ladyland. However it was during the recording of the songs that he suffered his untimely death. The album itself shows what direction his music was heading, a fusion of Rock, Blues and R&B

History: This album was in progress when Jimi died on Sept. After his death the tracks were originally released in 3 separate EP's, The Cry Of Love, Rainbow Bridge and War Heroes. It was recorded with Billy Cox on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums. Sound: Jimi believed this album to be a new creative rebirth for him and it features a very new sound that is somewhat different from Jimi other work. Its styles range from the funky rythyms in Dolly Dagger and Ezy Rider to the improvised blues jam in My Friend to a peaceful R&B ballad in Drifting. Other tracks that i especially enjoy are Ezy Rider, My Friend, Angel and Belly Button Window.

Additionally there is a short EP-length collection of tracks allegedly recorded in Hendrix's London flat in 1968 that contains an acoustic track of Angel, with some different lyrics, together with some jams that would evolve into 1983 among others, again all worth finding. I recommend those tracks in addition to First Rays of the New Rising Sun, not in lieu of them. More By Jimi Hendrix. See All. Experience Hendrix: The Best of Jimi Hendrix.
