Is Funk Soul Sisters "classic and rare female funk," as the blurb on the back promises? It's rare, beyond a doubt. None of these 20 tracks were anything resembling hits, and only a few names here and there will ring bells with those outside of inner soul collecting circles, those including Fontella Bass, Loleatta Holloway, and Millie Jackson. Is it classic? No, although it's respectable woman-sung soul-funk from the late '60s and early '70s, mostly from small labels
But the first Funk Soul Sisters compilation struck a rich seem of soulful funk, and funky soul and this time round we think we have bettered that, and from my point of view managed to include some of my favourite records from my club DJing sets as well. So what have we got? Our opener is Honey and the Bees' Love Addict, which in the last year has gone from being a virtual unknown to becoming simply the most sought-after funk dancer.
The rest of the album will be out later in the year, and this is a worthy taster. Another of the unreleased cuts is by Lynn Varnado, who graces us with Staying At Home Like A Woman, and the rare Gator 45 Tell Me What's Wrong. As well as unreleased titles we have a bunch of cuts that have only appeared on soul comps put out by our sister label Kent. We felt Betty Bibbs' Pounds Of Soul, Paula Lamont's One Monkey and the alternative version of Little Ann's One Way Street were too funky for the BGP crowd to miss
The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
