Concert by the Sea is a live album by pianist Erroll Garner that was released by Columbia in 1955. It sold over a million dollars' worth of retail copies by 1958, qualifying for gold record status by the definition of that time but has never been acknowledged as such by the RIAA.

Concert by the Sea wasn’t really a jazz LP in the traditional sense. Instead, it was more of a smooth-jazz-pop crossover featuring pianist Erroll Garner’s lush, romantic treatments of American standards, such as April in Paris, Autumn Leaves and Where or When. Jazz fan or not, the album has broad appeal for anyone who gives it a listen. Interestingly, Garner was self-taught; he couldn’t read a lick of music. What he did have was an abundance of talent, and an ear for music that few possess. Concert by the Sea was a happy accident. Recorded live in a church in Carmel, California, in 1955, making an album was not part of the plan.

The Concert by the Sea album, is being reissued with better audio quality and more material. Ms. Rosenberg initiated an archival effort, enlisting the ethnomusicologist Jocelyn Arem and Mr. Rosenthal, the producer. Over the last several years, working with a small team as the Erroll Garner Jazz Project, they sorted through the bounty, which includes Garner’s final performance, and a week’s worth of live recordings at the Village Gate in 1965. That the archive resides in Garner’s hometown, with a mission of outreach to its African-American community, is right in line with Ms. Glaser’s hopes. So is The Complete Concert by the Sea, which was assembled through considerable detective work, in the Sony vault in New York and at the Monterey Jazz Festival, where Garner was a frequent performer.

Erroll Garner became a jazz star even though he never learned to read music. He taught himself to play the piano and landed a gig on the radio at age 10. As an adult, Garner recorded the live album, Concert by the Sea, on one melodic night in a church in Carmel, California. SPELLMAN, National Endowment for the Arts: Here we have Concert by the Sea, a very popular record by Erroll Garner. Now Garner, Murray, is a musician who had never studied at all, in fact he never learned to read music, and yet he gets a lot of complex stuff going in his work

Concert By The Sea was recorded September 19, 1955 in the scenic confines of a converted church in Carmel, California. The sonic were atrocious and the piano was a bit out of tune. Bassist Eddie Calhoun and drummer Denzil ("Move") Best are barely audible. The recital was a typical one from Garner. It included a couple of originals, some standards, and some show tunes, all played in that Garnerian manner
