Definition of Quatrain. A quatrain is a verse with four lines, or even a full poem containing four lines, having an independent and separate theme. Often one line consists of alternating rhyme, existing in a variety of forms. We can trace back quatrains in poetic traditions of various ancient civilizations, such as China, Ancient Rome, and Ancient Greece; and they continue to appear in the twenty-first century. During the Dark Ages in Europe, the Middle East, and Iran, polymath poets like Omar Khayyam popularized this type of poetry

Los Angeles group Quatrain issued an obscure album in 1969 mixing period Southern Californian folk-rock, psychedelic, and hard rock influences, produced and engineered by David Briggs (most famed for his work as producer with Neil Young). Quatrain grew out of the group the Human Jungle, who issued a couple obscure singles while signed to the Double Shot label, though they usually went under the name the Berries. Briggs found the band while they were doing a residency at the Topanga Corral not far north of . and got them a deal with Tetragrammaton Records, where he was a staff producer. Quatrain can be defined as, A poem, unit or stanza of four lines of verse, usually with a rhyme scheme of abab or its variant, xbyb. or. The rhyming fourline groups that make up the first eight or twelve lines of a sonnet are also known as quatrains. The ‘heroic quatrain’ of iambic pentameters also rhymes using the form abab. A different rhyme scheme (abba) is used in the In Memoriam stanza and some other forms. Quatrain is derived from Middle French, from quatre four, from Latin quattuor. Its first known use is found in 1585.
