It seems hard to believe now, but at the beginning of 2003, it appeared that underdog Kelly Rowland might usurp her fellow Destiny's Child member Beyoncé in the solo career stakes, having scored a . chart-topper and a . number one album shortly after her bandmate's Austin Powers-related "Work It Out" failed to even make it into.

Simply Deep is the debut solo studio album by American singer Kelly Rowland. Recorded within three weeks during the hiatus of her group Destiny's Child and upon the success of worldwide number-one hit single "Dilemma", a collaboration with rapper Nelly, the album facilitated Rowland in becoming a viable solo star. The album includes guest appearances from Nelly, Solange Knowles and Joe Budden. Simply Deep debuted and peaked at number twelve on the US Billboard 200, becoming Rowland's lowest-charting album to date. It was certified gold in 2003

American recording artist Kelly Rowland has recorded songs for her four studio albums and has collaborated with other artists for duets and featured songs on their respective albums and charity singles. Her discography as a solo artist began in 2000 on the remix of R&B recording artist Avant's single "Separated". During the hiatus of Destiny's Child, Rowland released her debut solo album Simply Deep in 2002, which contained influences of alternative-R&B and rock music. It included her joint worldwide number-one single "Dilemma" with rapper Nelly, as well as the singles "Stole", "Can't Nobody" and "Train on a Track". Following Destiny's Child's disbandment, Rowland prepared her next studio album initially under the title My Story.
