David Bowie is the second studio album by the English musician David Bowie, released under that title by Philips in the UK, and as Man of Words/Man of Music by Mercury in the US, on 14 November 1969. It was reissued in 1972 by RCA Records as Space Oddity (the title of the opening track, which had reached No. 5 in the UK Singles Chart). Space Oddity was the name used for CD releases of the album in 1984, 1990 and 1999, but it reverted to the original, eponymous title for 2009 and 2015 reissues.

Originally released as David Bowie in the UK and Man of Words/Man of Music in the US, David Bowie’s second album was reissued as Space Oddity in 1972. It was known under the name of its lead single – by far the most famous song on the album – on four subsequent releases, but from 2009 was released under its original name of David Bowie. Confusingly, so is Bowie’s 1967 début. Although the lead single hit in the UK, and eventually reached in 1975, the album was less successful, peaking at in the UK and in the US. Bowie was just getting started. David Bowie/Space Oddity Q&A.

Несмотря на то, что трек номер пять занял вершину британских хит-парадов, остальной материал альбома был мало схож с ним, хоть и получил много лестных отзывов. Space Oddity" is a play on the phrase "Space Odyssey," although the title does not appear in the lyrics. The song tells the story of Major Tom, a fictional astronaut who cuts off communication with Earth and floats into space. In a 2003 interview with Performing Songwriter magazine, Bowie explained: "In England, it was always presumed that it was written about the space landing, because it kind of came to prominence around the same time. But it actually wasn't. In 1972, the album was re-titled Space Oddity and re-issued in the US after Bowie achieved modest success in America with the singles "Changes" ( and "The Jean Genie" (.The newly released "Space Oddity" single made becoming Bowie's first US Top 40. In 1975, back in the UK, the song was once again released, this time on a single which also contained the songs "Changes" and "Velvet Goldmine.

The album, produced by Tony Visconti (bar 'Space Oddity' itself which was produced by the late Gus Dudgeon), was a giant leap forward in terms of songwriting for Bowie compared to his eponymous debut, and can be considered as the first truly essential David Bowie album. Now that David Bowie have become a world class rock star in his own right, the aspiring rock star scored an atmospheric and lyrical blockbuster album in 1969 that not only showcases his mystical poetic artistry and creative versatility, but it bought his groundbreaking career a step further.

There’s an ever disputed claim by certain fans that Space Oddity is David Bowie’s first essential album. They claim that its splendorous title track and handful of early gems make it a crucial purchase for any would-be Bowie fan, whilst other followers counter the notion of Space Oddity’s importance with claims of a directionless album, that has a pocket of superb moments but remains too musically cleft to be labelled a truly essential outing.
