Martha Argerich: The Legendary 1965 Recording. Chopin Piano Concertos Charles Dutoit, Montreal SO, and Martha Argerich. No one will ever accuse Frederic Chopin of being a great symphonist, and this is readily apparent in these Chopin Piano Concertos. After an interminable 4-minute orchestral prelude in the first movement of Piano Concerto No. 1, the listener feels they might have tuned into Beethoven lite, but the piano finally enters and Chopin’s true calling comes to the forefront.

The Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, Op. 11, is a piano concerto written by Frédéric Chopin in 1830, when he was twenty years old. It was first performed on 11 October of that year, in Warsaw, with the composer as soloist, during one of his farewell concerts before leaving Poland
