Talk about Yuzo Koshiro & Motohiro Kawashima - Streets Of Rage 3

Stick
No problems with my pressing and has a decent inherent volume. Quite happy with this release.

personal pick for fave of the SOR soundtracks, and Data Discs has done it great justice. musically forward-thinking, energetic, and experimental. so many super cool sounds to engage with. this soundtrack exists far beyond its place within a game. this is front to back FM techno aggression.

My rating for this album is not reflected on its packaging and pressing, both of which meets Data Discs's highest standard. It's more of my personal taste towards the music in general. As pointed out by the commentators below me, this is a divisive soundtrack compared to the tunes from past two Streets of Rage titles. Long gone are the cheerful house noise urging you to tap your feet, replaced with a distinct sound that's more aggressive and mechanical; almost resembling Industrial music to my ears. I'm certain more genre savvy listeners would have a more apt description for Streets of Rage 3's music, but whatever it is that Yoshiro and Kawashima created, it's its own vicious beast. It does have noteworthy tracks that bring immediate value to its experimental direction: "Bulldozer" caught my ears the most with its fast tempo that compliments the aggressive drumbeats; kudos to Kawashima on that one. If the game is of a much darker tone than its predecessors, maybe the harsh music is fitting (can't be sure, as I only got as far as I could on the much-harder American version). Regardless, I was easily drown out by some of the tracks included. It's possible the soundtrack will grow on me in time, but as it is, it's difficult to penetrate.Even Koshiro himself was aware of the negative reception behind this collaborative work. In the liner notes, he described his time with his co-composer: learning the tricks of the trade, and lending Kawashima's particular skillset on certain digital instruments. He wanted to push a new sound, experimenting on new equipment so the end result would stick. I won't call him and his partner nuts on trying something fresh, but what it turned out provides an immeasurable adjustment period for fans of video game music. {extra anecdotes}- I wish this was a gatefold album, so the inside of the jacket would have the original cover art from both the American and Europe releases. To me, it's jarring that the final Streets of Rage vinyl release uses the original JP boxart for the album art compared to the last two LPs which used the international cover designs.- I wish the three postcards (included with pre-orders) were kept in an envelope like the trading cards from the initial Streets of Rage LP orders. Just the fear of them being potentially damaged during shipping while they're drifting side by side speaks volumes.- No locked-groove tracks this time around. The past two LPs played a sound effect on loop at the end of Side B/D, so the lackthereof makes this album stand out even more unnervingly. At least provide a sound clip from Roo. He may be a joke character, but don't you think he deserves some attention?

Although been dismissed by lots of people i know as "dissonant" and inferior to the SOR 2 soundtrack, I have always liked this soundtrack and it is a pleasure to own such a luxurious item on vinyl. at times the soundtrack peaks on almost been Digital Hardcore-esque because of its sheer abrasiveness Motohiro bought to the table, whereas Yuzo's compositions rely on his usual well crafted rememberable melodies. (i can nicely say the only duff tracks on this release is the "bad ending" theme and final Mr. X boss fight theme) The presentation although i bought the normal black vinyl edition as always from Data Discs is very tidy, and the release comes with great hi-res covers of the original art. If you are a fan of this soundtrack, own this now.

Who'd have thought it!? Another superb sounding coloured record from Data Discs. Whoever they get their records pressed with are top tier for sure. Really happy with this record. A very intense and oppressive listen for sure and not for the faint of heart but interesting all the same. I think I prefer the Motohiro Kawashima tracks overall as he seems to tailor and tend to the random/auto composition tool whereas Yuzo Koshiro often leaves it bare and unchanged which can be really surprising, alarming and sometimes jarring.
