Best Of – Volume I is the first greatest hits album by American hard rock band Van Halen, released in 1996. The album does not contain any songs from the band's 1982 album Diver Down. Best Of – Volume I also features "Humans Being", the band's contribution to the Twister soundtrack. The two newly recorded songs, "Can't Get This Stuff No More" and "Me Wise Magic", at the end of the album are with original lead vocalist David Lee Roth.

In theory, a Van Halen greatest-hits collection should be easy to assemble, but Best Of, Vol. 1 proves that isn't the case. By trying to give the David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar eras equal space, they wind up not representing either particularly well. The first eight songs run through several of Diamond Dave's biggest songs - "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," "Runnin' With the Devil," "And the Cradle Will Rock," "Jump," and "Panama

Van Halen's first album with Hagar, 1986's 5150, was the band's first No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The three studio albums that succeeded, OU812, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge and Balance, also topped the charts. In 1996, Hagar left Van Halen amidst similar tension with the Van Halen brothers. Roth rejoined briefly and recorded two songs with the band for the 1996 compilation Best Of – Volume I, but Van Halen eventually settled on Gary Cherone, frontman of the then defunct Boston-based band Extreme

Is Van Halen Van Halen’s Best Album? Nick DeRiso: Objectively, this is their best album. I don’t think, pound for pound, there’s any denying that. For most of its length, Van Halen plays like a greatest-hits album, just one great song followed by another followed by another – and so many of them are radio staples. On a windows-down summer day, I’m going Diver Down, every time. Michael Gallucci: Yeah, it's their best album. From the very first song, it pretty much launched the direction hard rock headed for the next 10 years. The Van Halen version - even though it's heavier and has way more tricks up its sleeve - is little more than a new-generation tribute with the volume turned up. Zaleski: The Kinks, simply because that version has an innate rawness I think works better with the lyrics. Wilkening: Listen, I can’t help when I was born, or what I heard first.
