This concert, recorded at the Cow Palace in San Francisco in 1978, served as the basis for both a famous concert film and a the well-regarded live album found here. It shows Neil Young concluding the first phase of what would become one of the most important and influential careers in rock and roll history.
When Neil Young embarked upon his Rust Never Sleeps tour of 1978 with Crazy Horse, he recorded the shows and filmed one performance at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. The recordings resulted in two 1979 albums, Rust Never Sleeps, a collection of the new songs performed on the tour, and Live Rust, a live album chronicling the bulk of the set list. The Cow Palace show appeared as a theatrically released film also called Rust Never Sleeps that later was issued as a home video.

Life is an album by Canadian musician Neil Young and his backing band Crazy Horse, and it is Young's last release on the Geffen label. Like their 1979 album Rust Never Sleeps, Young and the Horse performed most of this album's songs live with the exceptions of "Cryin' Eyes" and "We Never Danced" which were recorded in studio. The album was released on July 6, 1987. The first three tracks all handle the topic of world politics, and ponder the role of the United States in the world.
