Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett (6 January 1946 – 7 July 2006) was an English singer, songwriter, and musician who co-founded the band Pink Floyd in 1965. Barrett named the group and was their original lead singer, guitarist and principal songwriter. He was ousted in April 1968 after David Gilmour took over as their new guitarist. Barrett was briefly hospitalised amid speculation of mental illness and his excessive use of psychedelic drugs.
Syd Barrett, the rock icon, died long before pancreatic cancer claimed his physical body on July 7th, 2006. Ten years after his death, here are some little-known facts about one of music’s most unique figures. 1. Barrett tried to join a religious sect before achieving success as a musician. Waters relayed the unusual story to Barrett, who was moved to immortalize the local eccentric in song. I thought Arnold Layne was a nice name and fitted well into the music I had already composed, Barrett told Melody Maker in 1967. 3. One of Barrett’s Pink Floyd singles remains unreleased. Considering Barrett’s relatively slight musical output, the absence of Vegetable Man and Scream Thy Last Scream leaves a sizable hole in his canon. The former was penned in 1967 as a spontaneous response to manager Peter Jenner’s request for a follow up to Pink Floyd’s then-recent single, See Emily Play.
The story takes in CND marches in the early Sixties, the foundation of the London Free School and the Notting Hill Carnival. There are brand new interviews with Roger Waters and Nick Mason from Pink Floyd, John "Hoppy" Hopkins, Joe Boyd, Kevin Ayers, Barry Miles, Phil May from The Pretty Things and many more. This fascinating programme is set in a musical context with the music of Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd and The Pretty Things. Added to My Q. Show Information.
Syd Barrett, the erratically brilliant songwriter and singer who created the psychedelic rock of Pink Floyd only to leave the band in 1968 with mental problems, died on July 7 at his home in Cambridgeshire, England. He was 60. His death was confirmed by a spokesman for his former band, Doug Wright of LD Communications, who did not give a cause. Mr. Barrett had long suffered from diabetes. A statement from Mr. Wright said: The band are very naturally upset and sad to hear of Syd Barrett’s death. Syd was the guiding light of the early band lineup and leaves a legacy which continues to inspire.
Syd Barrett left Pink Floyd in 1968 when his increasingly erratic behavior made his continued participation in the band impossible. Artist Site Released: May 19, 2014 ON Eagle Rock.
