Franz) Joseph Haydn (March 31, 1732 - May 31, 1809) was an Austrian composer. He was one of the most important, prolific and prominent composers of the classical period. He is often called the "Father of the Symphony" and "Father of the String Quartet" because of his important contributions to these genres. He was also instrumental in the development of the piano trio and in the evolution of sonata form. At the time of his death, he was one of the most celebrated composers across Europe. Joseph Haydn was the brother of Michael Haydn, himself a highly regarded composer, and Johann Evangelist Haydn, a tenor. He was also a close friend of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and a teacher of Ludwig van Beethoven.

Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) established many of the forms which became the foundation of the Classical and Romantic periods. He influenced both Mozart and Beethoven, and left a huge legacy as a prolific composer including 104 symphonies and almost as many string quartets. César Franck (1822-1890) was a Belgian-French Romantic composer and organist who was leading a movement to give French music an emotional, technical, and serious skill like that of German composers. He entered the Liège conservatory at the age of 8, and in 1834 his father took him a year later to the Paris Conservatory.
Haydn had an ulterior motive for writing the new work for Weidinger. He had managed to poach him from the orchestra in Vienna, persuading him to join the band of musicians, which Haydn headed, in the employ of the Austro-Hungarian Esterházy family. Weidinger premiered the work on his arrival, changing bits of the music as he did so (either with or without Haydn’s consent, it’s unclear).
