Williams offers up a robust, brassy score that leans heavily on the same prime Aaron Copland influences that informed Elmer Bernstein's Magnificent Seven and Jerome Moross's The Big Country. This fine Varese Sarabande release, notable for the presence and clarity of its recording, also features an unused alternate main title and other previously unreleased music from the film. One of the last scores to have an overture and intermission music, The Cowboys is unique in closing out an era where those two items were considered a necessary part of the motion picture experience.
