Among its releases were three LPs featuring Peter Serkin performing late Beethoven sonatas on a strong-toned but sweet and subtle Graf fortepiano. Remastered and re-released on two CDs in 2007, Pro Arte's recordings hold up remarkably well. Though the sessions were all done in St. Mary's Chapel in St. Paul Seminary in 1984 and 1985, each of the three sessions used different microphone configurations and different instrument positioning, resulting in three very different sounding recordings ranging from the close and intimate to the big and brash. Ludwig van Beethoven. 3. Rondo for piano in C major, Op. 51/1. 4.
Ludwig van Beethoven wrote his 32 piano sonatas between 1795 and 1822. Although originally not intended to be a meaningful whole, as a set they compose one of the most important collections of works in the history of music. Hans von Bülow called them "The New Testament" of the piano literature (Johann Sebastian Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier being "The Old Testament").
Peter Serkin, "play on a Graf fortepiano. Musical Concepts MC 122. Originally recorded for ProArte Digital in 1984-1985 (Opuses 109-111 originally on ProArte CDD 362; Opuses 51, 90, 101 on ProArte LP PAD 111 ; Opus 106 on ProArte LP PAD 181). But, we should ask, is the Graf the best fbrtepiano of the time for the realization of the late sonatas? Was it the instrument Beethoven had in mind or in his inner ear? To answer these questions, it's worth reminding ourselves of the late sonatas' dates of composition: the Sonata in E Minor/Major, Opus 90, was composed in 1814; the Sonata in A Major, Opus 101, in 1816; the Sonata in B-flat Major, Opus 106, in 1817-18; the Sonata in E Major, Opus 109, in 1820; and the Sonatas in A-flat.
