The Bad Plus is nothing if not confounding. The trio exalts in ambiguity and delights in dodging definition. Its music at once conveys affected irony and honest intelligence, melodrama and real poignancy. It resists interpretation. But one thing is for certain: the Bad Plus has created one of the most original and unmistakable sounds in contemporary music. The trio's third major-label album, Suspicious Activity?, will do little to quell the arguments the previous two have fueled in the jazz community.
The Bad Plus is a jazz trio from Minneapolis, Minnesota, consisting of bassist Reid Anderson, pianist Orrin Evans, and drummer Dave King. Ethan Iverson, Reid Anderson and David King first played together in 1989 but established The Bad Plus in 2000. The band recorded their first album, a self-titled effort released on Fresh Sound, after playing only three gigs together
Suspicious Activity? by The Bad Plus. com, this product will be manufactured on demand using CD-R recordable media. com's standard return policy will apply. In fact, this album really could have used more brilliant covers in the Bad Plus tradition and a little less original material. The other thing that makes this album dwindle a little is the production. The trio used a lot more overdubbing which sort of destroys the acoustic.
The Bad Plus have been challenging jazz listeners for a while, with their hip credentials and edgy attitude. Ethan Iverson is an accomplished pianist, original and sparky, while Reid Anderson has an expressive approach to double bass, with a monster sound. Listen to the clumpy groove and bombastic piano chords of Lost of Love .
SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY?-the band's third album-is unlikely to settle any of those debates. With their funky, deconstructionist cover of Vangelis's "(Theme from) Chariots of Fire" and their shape-shifting originals, the Bad Plus are full of surprises. The band excels equally at driving compositions ("Anthem for the Earnest") that draw on the punchy, bass-fueled energy of rock, and off-kilter lyricism like the jittery, poetic "Knows the Difference.
