Carcass - Reek Of Putrefaction (1988).

Reek of Putrefaction is one of those albums classed as legendary or influential due to its proximity to the start of a specific genre or style, or one that’s been copied so widely that the original idea is almost lost within reams of copyists and wannabes. Carcass would later create some essential death metal cuts, such as Symphonies of Sickness and Necroticism, but their debut reeked of grind, and ugly grind as it was. Its sound is truly horrifying, a cauldron of gurgled growls and screams, played over a raw, hurtling soundtrack of grinding riffs and thundering blastbeats  . Would this be as revered if its production were clearer? Who knows, but again who cares, as its still a hell of a sound and a hell of an album. If its great cause its shit, then shit it shall be, but I still revere it as a classic, even if the band doesn’t! Plus, its perfect to scare these emo kids off our metal lawns!

Everything aspect of Reek of Putrefaction is harsh and uncompromising, from the tortured vocals of Jeff Walker(the raspier growl), Bill Steer(guttural growls) and Ken Owens(distorted growls) to the intense blast beat drumming to the cruel guitar savagery that assails the listeners ear drums. Vocally the trio's approach to screaming is utterly sickening (in a good way). All instruments and vocals (except for the drums which are actually very clear) are horribly muffled as if someone put a pillow over the speakers of the amplifiers. In most cases this type of production would ruin an album, but in Carcass's case the abysmal production works perfectly. For whatever reasons, the muffled instruments and sounds manage to "complete" the sound of Carcass, making whats already intense and raw, even more so. Lyrically, Reek of Putrefaction provides content that would make even hardened veterans Cannibal Corpse gagging.

Original album released in 1988. The album is presented in a 12-panel Digipak with full lyrics and artwork and is sealed in a white 'medical' bag with clear sticker, ensuring the controversial cover art is hidden

Reek of Putrefaction was re-released on CD for the first time in 1989 by Earache Records (ca. no. MOSH 18CD for the uncensored version, GMOSH 18CD for the censored cover). The CD (76:25) contained both, the "Symphonies Of Sickness" and the "Reek Of Putrefaction" album, but omitted the "Reek Of Putrefaction" tracks 5, 6, 8, 13, 19 and 21. lyrics here are taken from the booklet. Recording information: Recorded, mixed, re-recorded and re-mixed at Rich "Funeral" Bitch Studios December 1987 - March 1988 on 16 track facilities

Listen free to Carcass – Reek of Putrefaction (Genital Grinder, Regurgitation of Giblets and more). When released, Reek of Putrefaction reached on the UK Indie Chart, establishing Carcass as one of the pioneers of the grindcore genre. The late BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel declared it his favourite album of 1988, in an interview for British newspaper The Observer. Reek of Putrefaction was recorded in four days at a small studio in Birmingham. According to Bill Steer, the studio's engineer "ruined" the record, especially its drum tracks

Whatever it is, Reek of Putrefaction consists of songs so immediate and there that trying to analyze them in depth is practically impossible - you accept it and let yourself go from the start or you never ever want to hear anything like it again. There are occasional moments of calm - "Genital Grinder," which starts things off, begins with a low bass rumble and a great, chunky riff, a smart way to draw folks in before the final slaughter
