Mark Isham handles the task tastefully and tactfully. He uses Japanese haiku as a basis for rhythm and repetition. The only ethnic instrument is the bamboo flute. This is not Tibetan music, but it does evoke imagery of the Himalayas and "the place where the earth and the heavens meet. The atmospheres are subtle and mysterious.

This album has an average beat per minute of 128 BPM (slowest/fastest tempos: 58/180 BPM). 1. Tibet Part I. 13'13. 58 BPM. Recent albums by Mark Isham. Songs My Children Taught Me. 1991.

LP (12" album, 33 rpm). Mark Isham Format: Vinyl. Incredibly beautiful, Tibet, is more than a CD-its an "experience" centered in the deepest sanctum of the soul. Not only does Isham deliver the highest degree of musicality, ethereal orchestration, luscious tonal coloration, haunting chord progressions, balance, structure et. but also, he brings the immanent spiritual nature of the country Tibet to this music. Just thinking about the music, the skin on the back of my neck ripples and I get goosebumps.

The music on this recording was composed and arranged for the Windham Hill video, "Tibet". It provides a look at the place called the "Roof Of The World", where the heavens and the earth meet, and where centuries old rhythms continue. It is a brief glimpse of vast stretches of empty, high plains and snowcapped peaks. The monasteries and the monks who live there are the last of an ever diminishing religious culture which has no parallel in the West.

The Windham Hill video "Tibet", eighth in the series of Windham Hill videos, is available on LaserDisc from Pioneer Artists and on videocassette from Paramount Home Video.
