Recorded in 1991 by BBC Television, Klaus Tennstedt's stirring performance with the London Symphony Orchestra of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8 in E flat major, the so-called "Symphony of a Thousand," is a treasure that has been missing from the catalog far too long. This live recording documents one of the most exciting performances of this work, and the combination of artists for this occasion is felicitous.

Klaus Tennstedt conductor Thomas Hampson baritone London Philharmonic Orchestra David Nolan leader. Klaus Tennstedt cemented the London Philharmonic Orchestra's celebrated relationship with the music of Gustav Mahler, concurrently creating a distinguished conductor-orchestra partnership.

Mahler conducted the premiere of his Symphony No. 7 in Prague in 1908. A few weeks later he conducted it in Munich and the Netherlands. Both the audience and the performers at the premiere were confused by the work, and it was not well received. It remained for a while as one of Mahler's least appreciated works, often accused of incoherence. Klaus Tennstedt with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
