Live at the Fillmore East is a live album by Neil Young and Crazy Horse featuring guitarist Danny Whitten, released in 2006. In February and March 1970, Young and Crazy Horse went on tour to support Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (1969). Live at the Fillmore East features performances from the tour. The tour was the last Neil Young and Crazy Horse tour to feature Whitten.

Whitten's ghost haunted Young & Crazy Horse throughout the '70s, particularly on his gloomy masterpiece Tonight's the Night, which featured a version of Whitten's great "Come on Baby Let's Go Downtown" recorded during the group's stint at the Fillmore East in March 1970, which this album documents in a fuller fashion. That version of "Downtown" on Tonight's the Night hints at the power of this performance: simultaneously lithe and lumbering, it captures how Neil & Crazy Horse could sound at once unpredictable and inevitable

All Songs✱ Mixed by John Nowland with Neil young, 12/5/96. Assisting Engineer: John Hausmann. Except "Cowgirl In The Sand" Mixed by Peter K. Siegel, 3/8/70.

And hopefully, with this awesome live album, the floodgates have truly been opened and there are many more to come, in the vein of Dylan's Bootleg series. This disc is worth it alone for the version of "Wondering," a tune not officially recorded until many years later in Neil's weird '80s rockabilly phase. the only complaint I have is that the cd is too short at only 45 minutes long. it left me wanting more classic neil young and crazy horse. there is some short versions of songs and some longer jams on this album. 3 people found this helpful.

Recorded during the Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere tour, this set finds Neil pushing that album’s extended guitar odysseys-like Cowgirl in the Sand -to even stormier depths. But there are also revelatory early versions of future standards, like the jangly Winterlong and the cowpoke lament Wonderin’. And there’s a raucous rip through the Danny Whitten-sung Come On Baby Let’s Go Downtown, a song that became the late guitarist’s memorial when it surfaced posthumously on 1975’s Tonight’s the Night. Crazy Horse At the Fillmore 1970 (Live) Neil Young.

But it has rather obscured the excellent recent work by Young. This year has already seen a dignified concert movie (Heart of Gold) and an album-long diatribe against George W. Bush (Living With War). Live at the Fillmore East finds Young in 1970 patenting the monolithic groove that has sustained him since and jousting with his guitar foil, Danny Whitten. Cowgirl in the Sand lasts for 14 minutes, and could happily chug on for ever. On some nights, you suspect, it very nearly did.
