Judging by the popularity of the Sandpipers' debut long-player, Guantanamera (1966), the mid-'60s were primed for an easier contrast to the increasingly raucous strains of rock & roll. The idea of overhauling modern material - from a variety of sources and genres - into soft and affective ballads and in English and Spanish was (and remains) a novel concept.
The Sandpipers were an American easy listening trio who carved a niche in 1960s folk rock with their vocals and innovative arrangements of international ballads and pop standards. They are best remembered for their cover version of "Guantanamera", which became a transatlantic Top 10 hit in 1966, and their Top 20 hit "Come Saturday Morning" from the soundtrack of the film The Sterile Cuckoo in 1970.

The "Guantanamera" collection is their introduction to the pop music world, and from a purely personal standpoint, it is some of their very best work. This is reflected in their adaptation of "La Bamba," which a very pleasant rendition of an old Spanish wedding song, not the "rock" version by Richie Valens. The Sandpipers gave "Louie Louie" the same treatment, and it is a very pretty tune. You will find the entire CD to be a most pleasant listening experience, as the selections from "The Sandpipers" are of equal quality. The combination album "The Sandpipers" was new to me but equally good. If you like the beginning folk sounds-soft and melodic-this is the way to go. Too bad the Sandpipers weren't with us long but what they recorded was wonderful!!
