Der Sandmann ("Zwei feine Stieflein hab ich an"), song for voice & piano (Lieder-Album für die Jugend), Op. 79/12. Few of Robert Schumann's songs have such smoothly rolling legato passages as those of the tender Der Sandmann (The Sandman), Op. The hero of Kletke's poem moves quickly to Robert Schumann's light, dance-like accompaniment while sprinkling sand on children's eyes. His movements are depicted with great sensitivity in the piano: in the bass, staccatos sound his tiptoe steps, contrasting his pedaled pauses; in the treble, flowing sixteenth notes gently spin the magical air that surrounds this kind, gentle character

Dichterliebe, "A Poet's Love" (composed 1840), is the best-known song cycle of Robert Schumann (Op. 48). The texts for the 16 songs come from the Lyrisches Intermezzo of Heinrich Heine, written 1822–23 and published as part of the poet's Das Buch der Lieder. Following the song-cycles of Franz Schubert (Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise), those of Schumann constitute part of the central core of the genre in musical literature.
