In conjunction with the release of Ken Burns' ten-part, 19-hour epic PBS documentary Jazz, Columbia issued 22 single-disc compilations devoted to jazz's most significant artists, as well as a five-disc historical summary. Since the individual compilations attempt to present balanced overviews of each artist's career, tracks from multiple labels have thankfully been licensed where appropriate.

Jazz is a 2001 television documentary miniseries, directed by Ken Burns. It was broadcast on PBS in 2001, and was released on DVD and VHS on January 2, 2001 by the same company. Its chronological and thematic episodes provided a history of jazz, emphasizing innovative composers and musicians and American history. Swing musicians Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are the central figures.

It was probably inevitable that Silver would, especially after a date like the Columbia album referred to in the 2nd paragraph above, leave the Messengers to form his own group. Yet Silver's departure from the Messengers' line-up made a major difference-one that would eventually prove the least flattering to the Silver Quintet.

Clifford Brown, Monk, and then take your pick-Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Horace Silver, Johnny Griffin, Bobby Timmons, Wynton Marsalis, not one a titan but here you'd never know it.
