Singer/songwriter and t Loreena McKennitt is one of Canada's most beloved national artists, a folk chanteuse, and a new age troubadour who made her breakthrough in the mid-'80s with her literate and oft-experimental focus on Celtic-tinged traditional and original material, coupled with her haunting harp playing. Its success was surpassed by McKennitt's fourth album, The Visit. Distributed by Warner Canada, the album sold over 600,000 copies (six-times platinum) in Canada and received a Juno Award, as did her next recording, The Mask and Mirror, in 1994.

Canadian artist Loreena McKennitt (b. 1957) has become famous as a singer, composer, pianist, and harpist. However, to most people, she is best known for her soprano voice. In the album liner notes, McKennitt describes it as an "exploration of the Celts and their history", leading to many places across the globe as she journeys along the ancient Silk Road. Thus, "An Ancient Muse" takes you to places in Outer Mongolia, Northwest China, Anatolia, and Ephesus in Turkey as well as the Greek Island of Chios. And, of course, Istanbul. The Gates of Istanbul Recorded at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios, this track is of excellent recording quality.
