For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of; for necessity is laid upon me; yea woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel. The greatest man of Apostolic times was the apostle Paul. He was always great in everything. Paul, therefore, could speak from experience concerning his ministry; because he was the chief of ministers. There is no nonsense in what he speaks; it is all from the depth of his soul. And we may be sure that when he wrote this, he wrote it with a strong unpalsied hand-"Though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of, for necessity is laid upon me, yea, woe is me if I preach not the gospel. Now, these words of Paul, I trust, are applicable to many ministers in the present day; to all those who are especially called, who are directed by the inward impulse of the Holy Spirit.

Did Jesus ever say, Only preach the gospel? Is that his directive for pastoral ministry? Perhaps the ready mind jumps to Paul’s words of introduction to his short summary of the gospel in 1 Corinthians 15:3, For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received. Many people read of first importance and seem to conclude of only importance. Or maybe another Pauline passage springs to mind: For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified (1 Cor. 2:2)

How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! Romans 10:15. Introduction: 1. As we study through the book of Acts, we need to understand Paul’s evangelism of the Gentiles (Acts 13-28). I. The ERROR A. Most hold gospel preaching saves the lost, rescues the perishing, and so fills heaven. 1. The common scheme is God wants to save everybody so bad that He sent His Son to pay for all their sins, and the Holy Spirit tries to get everyone to believe; so salvation is possible for all, if they would but cooperate with God’s desires. 2. Gospel preaching is understood and treated as a sacrament for Baptists – an outward sign that conveys inward grace – to bring eternal life to lost wicked men.
The aim of my title is not to criticize the gospel of evangelicalism but to assume that it is biblical and true, and then to ask whether Jesus preached it. If I had it to do over again, I would use the title Did Jesus Preach Paul’s Gospel? - the gospel of justification by grace alone, through faith alone, on the basis of Christ’s blood and righteousness alone, for the glory of God alone. What I am driven by in this message, and in much of my thinking since my days in graduate school in Germany, is the conviction that Jesus and Paul preached the same gospel. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted. You can tell by the way the parable comes to a climax in verse 14 ( This man went down to his house justified ) that the parable is about how to be justified and how not to be justified.
