Joseph Saddler (born January 1, 1958), better known by his stage name Grandmaster Flash is an American hip hop recording artist and DJ. He is considered to be one of the pioneers of hip-hop DJing, cutting, scratching and mixing. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, becoming the first hip hop act to be honored.

After the breakup of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Flash recorded a trio of albums for the Elektra label before reuniting with The Furious Five for the 1988 album 'On The Strength'. After struggling with and overcoming drug addiction, Flash returned to the music scene with three DJ Mix albums, a weekly radio show and TV spots. An album for the Malboro label in Germany was released in 1998 ('Flash Is Back') and in 2009, a new studio album entitled 'The Bridge. Concept Of A Culture' was released worldwide.

Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five merged the Afrocentric consciousness expressed by such early rappers as Gil Scott-Heron and the Last Poets with b-boy production to create "The Message," an all-time rap anthem. It was the focal point of this LP, which also included "It's Nasty" and "Scorpio," two other strong cuts that might have been winners on their own. Unfortunately, rather than a starting point, this album proved to be their ultimate peak.
