Meanwhile, Pink Mountaintops-his assumed solo act that’s wrangled together various full bands of collaborators during the last decade-scored perfect spring treks with the top down, as McBean delivered exclamatory anthems about love, friendship and sex. But if you value your own safety, don’t listen to Get Back, the first Pink Mountaintops record in five years, while behind the wheel-or for that matter, while doing anything that requires specific and steady motor skills. The album’s first half is consistent enough, offering a bright-eyed romp through McBean’s record collection. The trouble isn’t that McBean thought it best to include a rap verse on Get Back, or even that the only woman to appear on this album sets herself up as an automatic punchline. J Mascis plays guitar on Get Back-can he rap about dicks, too?)
As y and headphone-ready as it is willfully lo-fi, the ten-song Get Back is as spirited an outing as anything that Stephen McBean has released with his meal-ticket band, Black Mountain, and while it might lack some of that group's seismic follow-through, it more than makes up for the thunder with ample amounts of psych-fueled.

Their second album In the Future was a finalist for the 2008 Polaris Music Prize and was also nominated for "Best Alternative Album" in the 2009 Juno Awards. The song "Stay Free" from In the Future was featured on the Spider-Man 3 soundtrack. In September 2010 Black Mountain performed in an amphitheater located in the woods of Oisterwijk at the Incubate (festival) in Tilburg, Netherlands
The best and most consistent Pink Mountaintops album to date, Get Back mines a deep vein of nostalgia via song references, memory-scape imagery, and musical touchstones in kraut rock, post-punk and new wave. When it's done well, with diverse influences blended together, it's so easy to like if not love, and as such Get Back instantly feels like a long lost friend.
