Sister George was an influential queercore band from London that was formed in 1994. The group's name was inspired by the 1968 UK movie The Killing of Sister George, which was an adaptation of the play of the same name. Although queercore bands had existed in the UK in the 1980s, such as The Apostles/Academy 23, and No Brain Cells and in the early 1990s, such as Tongue Man, Sister George brought queercore into the spotlight there. Their album, Drag King, came out on Catcall Records, which was run by Liz Naylor. The band found themselves heralded in the pages of British music magazines such as the NME. They toured with acts like Huggy Bear and Hissyfit at first, but soon they were joined by other queer bands such as Mouthfull and Children's Hour, and it was these groups that pioneered queercore in the UK.

Sister George You got a lot to answer for girl I never met a man quite like you before, girl They say Get a razor or find a cure girl Sister George Give her what she needs Your testosterone tongue A steroid kiss A rope and a wish Sister George You got a lot to answer for man I never met a girl. quite like you before, man They say Die alone cuz Your life’s a menopause Give me what I need A dress with frills Give me what I need Some little pills Give me what I need To make me breed I’d rather be a Killer in tweed. Drag kings are mostly female performance artists who dress in masculine drag and personify male gender stereotypes as part of an individual or group routine. They may be lesbian, bisexual, transgender, genderqueer, or otherwise part of the LGBT community. They may also be straight. A typical drag show may incorporate dancing, acting, stand-up comedy, and singing, either live or lip-synching to pre-recorded tracks.

Their album, Drag King, came out on Catcall Records, which was run by Liz Naylor. Their album was rereleased in the . by Outpunk Records, and a music video for the song "Handle Bar" was made. Sister George is a beloved character in the popular radio series Applehurst, a nurse who ministers to the medical needs and personal problems of the local villagers. She is played by June Buckridge, who in real life is a gin-guzzling, cigar-chomping, slightly sadistic masculine woman, the antithesis of the sweet character she plays.
