Vladimir Ashkenazy recorded all the Beethoven piano concertos three times: in 1971-1972 with Georg Solti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, in 1983 with Zubin Mehta and the Vienna Philharmonic, and in 1986-1987 with himself conducting the Cleveland Orchestra. Claudio Arrau recorded it four times: with Alceo Galliera in 1958, Bernard Haitink in 1964 and twice with Sir Colin Davis, first with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and later with the Staatskapelle Dresden. Maurizio Pollini recorded the five piano concertos twice for Deutsche Grammophon. First with Karl Böhm and Eugen Jochum (in the first two concertos) and the Vienna Philharmonic and later with Claudio Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic. Alfred Brendel recorded all Beethoven's piano concertos at least three times over his career. Friedrich Gulda recorded all Beethoven's piano concertos with Horst Stein and the Vienna Philharmonic between 1971 and 1973. Paul Lewis recorded all five of Beethoven's piano concertos with the BBC Symphony Orchestra with conductor Jiří Bělohlávek.

The overwhelming phrasing of Mindru Katz and mercurial drive given by Barbirolli and the Halle Orchestra made of this recording a cult issue for many music lovers. I had heard about about this version twenty years ago and fortunately, I could get a copy thanks to a gift of a friend. All I can tell you is you will hardly find such febrile rapport and sheer commitment between piano and orchestra. An exceptional version for the ages to come. This album really generated my love for classical music and the love of hi-fidelity sound reproduction equipments. Today, I am a concert pianist and a piano teacher by profession, and I owe everything to Mindru Katz's brilliant and definitive interpretation of Beethoven's Emperor Concerto.

Beethoven: Piano Concertos Nos. 1-5. Release Date. Beethoven: Piano Concertos Nos. (LP - Decca

This Grammy-winning release marks Vladimir Ashkenazy’s first of three cycles of the complete Beethoven piano concertos and captures the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and conductor Sir Georg Solti at the peak of their careers. Ashkenazy recorded these concertos in May 1971 and May 1972: in 1971 the third and fifth concertos were recorded; a year later the cycle was completed with the first, second and fourth concertos. Among the foremost musical figures of our time, Vladimir Ashkenazy was born in Gorky in 1937. 2014 will see the release of the album Walking in the Air, in which Vladimir Ashkenazy (joined by Vovka Ashkenazy for two-piano works) plays music by his longtime friend Howard Blake – including pieces dedicated to the pianist – as well as an 11-CD set containing Rachmaninov’s complete works for piano.
