First with the Velvet Underground, and then as a solo artist, he made music ranging from the wildly experimental to the perfectly straightforward. But Reed was a storyteller above all, waxing poetic about the full, frightening spectrum of human emotions years before others would dare. With their trans heroines, drug narratives, love stories, elegies, guitar jams and drone-scapes, he made LPs that could be flawed. But they always showed a mind two moves ahead

Rock and Roll Diary: 1967-1980. on "Street Hassle" that closes this set ends the album on a high note. Rock and Roll Diary: 1967-1980 tries to summarize Reed's career as a major creative figure rather than pull together a handful of relative "hits," and if it doesn't quite achieve its goal, it comes close enough to remind anyone that Reed is one of the best and most intriguing figures in American rock & roll.

Almost as high-profile was Reed's 1990 album Songs for Drella, a collaboration with his former . bandmate John Cale which was written and recorded as a tribute to the late Andy Warhol. From there, Reed's recorded output continued to keep his fans happy - or, you know, as happy as Lou Reed fans get, anyway - and included Magic and Loss, Set the Twilight Reeling, Ecstasy, and The Raven, all of which are found within this set. But that's not all! You also get Reed's two live albums, Perfect Night in London and Animal Serenade
