Ellington at Newport is a 1956 live jazz album by Duke Ellington and his band of their 1956 concert at the Newport Jazz Festival, a concert which revitalized Ellington's flagging career. It stood for everything that jazz had been and could b.
Duke Ellington's appearance at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival has long been famous, and justifiably so. Paul Gonsalves' 27-chorus tenor solo on "Diminuendo in Blue and Crescendo in Blue" practically started a riot at Newport and made headlines around the world. The momentum generated by this concert led to Ellington's comeback and never let up during his 18 remaining years. A double CD put out in 1999 presents the entire concert performance, previously unheard material, and a few revelations.

When Duke Ellington took his orchestra to the Newport Jazz Festival in 1956, the band was in need of an uplift, some humongous event that would revitalize its image in the wake of bebop, hard bop, and so many more jazz currents. Ellington got the lift he needed when he called "Diminuendo in Blue" with set-closer "Crescendo in Blue" tacked on the end. Tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves got the nod from Ellington to segue from "Diminuendo" to "Crescendo," and he blew doors. Prior to Newport, Duke Ellington's band had been in a creative and commercial downturn-so there was little buildup to this set. Now part of jazz lore, it’s immortalized for the riot-inducing 27-chorus solo by tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves on Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue (where Ellington can be heard urging him on as the crowd erupts) and several other tracks that fed off the crowd’s energy, particularly Skin Deep and a stompin’ Jeep’s Blues. It's the recording that made Ellington the beloved elder statesman we know him as today
