Miliy Balakirev, The USSR State Symphony Orchestra, Evgeniy Svetlanov In Bohemia. Miliy Balakirev, Philharmonia Orchestra, Evgeniy Svetlanov Symphony No. 2 in D minor. Peter Tchaikovsky, The USSR State Symphony Orchestra, Evgeniy Svetlanov The Nutcracker, Op. 71: Act I. (play).

The Symphony No. 1 in C major by Mily Balakirev is scored for 3 flutes (the third doubling piccolo), oboe, English horn, 3 clarinets (switching between B flat and A instruments), 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, triangle, cymbals, snare drum, bass drum, 2 harps, first and second violins, violas, cellos and double basses

Symphony No. 1 in C major (use): III. Andante. 30. Symphony No. 1 in C major (use): IV. Finale: Allegro moderato. The symphony itself belongs firmly to the Russian romantic tradition, cast in four movements (with the scherzo placed second); it is relatively ambitious in scope but Balakirev actually manages to pull of a work that doesn't really have any dull moments. Stylistically it isn't too far away from the Borodin symphonies, is heavily influenced by folk music and is stronger on atmosphere (and orchestration) than on thematic development, but the ideas themselves are actually pretty interesting, and in particular the first movement is stirring.
