Lindgren, as Andersen notes, believed that we ought to learn to be solo artists at every stage of life. If they’ve never learned to be alone, people develop only weak and fragile defenses against the ways life decides to hurt them, she said. Lindgren was the eldest, dance-crazy daughter of farmers in a small town in southern Sweden. By 1924, at sixteen, she was dressing in slacks, jackets, ties, and caps and scissoring her blonde hair to boy length like the radical bachelorette in Victor Margueritte’s La garçonne (a mode Scandinavian male columnists scorned as the Apache cut ). Her instinct for storytelling-so evident to her teachers-landed young Lindgren a gig as a trainee journalist at a local paper. There, the tomboy geared into temptress.
Astrid Lindgren’s World is not one but many worlds collected in one place. When you walk through the park you will pass well-known places such as Wild Rose Valley, Matt’s Forest and Junedale. Continue a bit further and there is Villekulla Cottage, Karlsson’s roof and Katthult. They are all places that can be recognised from Astrid Lindgren’s stories. But they wouldn’t be quite as exciting without their inhabitants. What would Villekulla Cottage be without Pippi and Matt’s Fort without the robbers?
Astrid Lindgren grew up in Näs, near Vimmerby, Småland, Sweden, and many of her books are based on her family and childhood memories and landscapes. Astrid Lindgren died in her home in central Stockholm. Her funeral took place in the Storkyrkan (Great Church) in Gamla stan. Among those attending were King Carl XVI Gustaf with Queen Silvia and others of the royal family, and Prime Minister Göran Persson.
