Beggars Opera were a progressive rock band from Glasgow, Scotland, formed in Glasgow in 1969 by guitarist Ricky Gardiner, vocalist Martin Griffiths, and bassist Marshall Erskine. The line-up consisted of Ricky Gardiner (guitar/vocals) (born in 1948, Edinburgh, Scotland), Alan Park (keyboards) (born 10 May 1951, Glasgow, Scotland), Martin Griffiths (vocals),(born 8 October 1949,Newcastle upon Tyne) Marshall Erskine (bass/flute) and Raymond Wilson (drums)

Beggar's Opera even make a reference to Blue Rondo A La Turque in the first track while the second track is IMO the highlight of the album. Act One" was their debut album and featured some pretty amazing musicianship and song writing including an ode to composer Suppe's popular "Poet and Peasant" overture which opens up this album. Essentially this album is organ led with full support by the bass, guitar and drum. This album in many ways is my personal favourite of all their albums and I love the exploratory and unique space they explored on recording this gem.

Defiantly cast in the shadow of the then-recently defunct Nice, but brimming with their own ideas and imagination, Beggars Opera emerged in 1970 with a debut album that still stands as one of the crown jewels of prog. Five tracks long in its original (Vertigo label) form, but bolstered with both sides of their debut single for the Repertoire CD, Act One is an audacious blending of hard riffs, Heep-esque vocals, and crazed organ and Mellotron, and it's those latter elements that most distinctly flavor the album.

I like Beggars Opera and Act One contains melodic guitar jams, solid songwriting and neat arrangements. One person found this helpful. This is the first album for Beggars Opera and in many ways carries on from the Nice in musical terms. The music is definately progressive rock with heavy influences from classical music (their name is taken from an opera by John Gay). If you like you music with pomp and circumstance aplomb you will love this album. Vinyl copies now change hands in England for £30 upwards. 7 people found this helpful.
