George Crumb’s Makrokosmos pieces for amplified piano were created during an especially fertile period of his compositional career. Volume I of Makrokosmos followed in 1972 and Volume II in 1973. Volume II is in memory of Gustav Mahler and is inscribed to the late Robert Miller. Perhaps the most famous aspect of Makrokosmos, and of Crumb’s music in general, is the dazzling exploration of musical timbre.

He writes in a modern, though tonal and not experimental music style. He studied at the Sibelius Academy, where his teachers included Joonas Kokkonen. He has had works commissioned by the Kronos Quartet, and has also written 6 operas, 8 symphonies, concertos for violin, cello, flute, horn and english horn as well as several chamber works. He won the Nordic Council Music Prize in 1978 for his opera Ratsumies. Colorado Springs Youth Symphony Association.
George Crumb's reputation as a composer of hauntingly beautiful scores has made him one of the most frequently performed composers in today's musical world. This quartet formed around George Crumb's "Black Angels. The plan was hatched when Dan and Myra carpooled to Suzuki teacher training in Deerfield. They found the other half of the quartet through the Civic Orchestra. Every member of this quartet can be seen outside of the orchestra halls of Chicago performing chamber music of all sorts. The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra proudly presents the first chamber music series in Tai Kwun, the hottest historic l landmark. Six evening chamber concerts will be held between February and June 2019.
