Show me the meaning of the word Show me the meaning of the word 'Cause I've heard so much about it They say you can't live without it. Welcome to the human race With it's wars, disease and brutality You with your innocence and grace Restore some pride and dignity To a world in decline.

When the Pretenders came roaring out of the gate in 1979 with their first singles and album, Chrissie Hynde the lead vocalist, songwriter and rhythm guitarist suddenly found herself the focus of critics and fans with her piericingly direct and honest songs. What's more Hynde combined the melodic touch of someone like Ray Davies (she later became involved with The Kinks' Davies)with songs that celebrated women, sex and the joys of life. PROMO VIDEOS 1. The fourth album "Get Close" began to show a decline in the songwriting from Hynde and, with Martin Chambers no longer behind the drum kit and studio musicians brought in to augment the band (along with, later, two new members), the Pretenders sound gained a funky edge adding to the spikey elements of punk and 60's rock.
Pretenders is the debut studio album by British-American band The Pretenders, released on 7 January 1980 under Real Records in the UK, and Sire Records in the United States. A combination of rock, punk and pop music, this album made the band famous. The album features the singles "Stop Your Sobbing", "Kid" and "Brass in Pocket". Nick Lowe produced the Pretenders' first single, "Stop Your Sobbing", but decided not to work with them again as he thought the band was "not going anywhere". Chris Thomas took over on the subsequent recording.
