1Bacchus et Ariane Suite Op. 43 No. 117:27. Bacchus et Ariane Op. 43: Suite No. 2: 2I. Introduction. Vibrant, striking colours, sensuous harmonies and coruscating wit abound in this irresistible collection played by the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (OSR) under the baton of the young rising star Kazuki Yamada. Hailed by Gramophone magazine as a gifted, budding maestro with interpretative nous, strength of personality and scrupulous attention to detail, this is Yamada’s fourth outing for PENTATONE following his three critically acclaimed releases of dance music.
Roussel's most important works were the ballets Le festin de l'araignée, Bacchus et Ariane, and Aeneas and the four symphonies, of which the Third in G minor, and the Fourth in A major, are highly regarded and epitomize his mature neoclassical style. His other works include numerous ballets, orchestral suites, a piano concerto, a concertino for cello and orchestra, a psalm setting for chorus and orchestra, incidental music for the theatre, and much chamber music, solo piano music, and songs. Rene Leibowitz recorded that suite in 1952 with the Paris Philharmonic, and Georges Prêtre recorded it with the Orchestre National de France for EMI in 1984. One brief assessment of his career says:. yet he was an important and compelling French composer.
This Albert Roussel disc couples two of the composer's most popular pieces, which are given authentic performances by the compatriot Orchestre de Paris under music director Christoph Eschenbach. It is the final in a successful cycle of three releases featuring the four symphonies and two ballets by the French composer. The Third Symphony, which was given its world première in Boston in 1930, is a true masterpiece and remains the most popular of Roussel's symphonic works.
