The Sisters of Mercy are an English rock band, formed in 1980 in Leeds. After achieving early underground fame there, the band had their commercial breakthrough in the mid-1980s and sustained it until the early 1990s, when they stopped releasing new recorded output in protest against their record company WEA. Currently, the band are a touring outfit only. The group has released three original studio albums, the last of which was released in 1990.

Vision Thing is the third studio album by English gothic rock band the Sisters of Mercy. It was released on 13 November 1990 through Merciful Release and EastWest Records, with Elektra Records handling the US release. Soon after the release of the band's previous album, Floodland, Eldritch approached guitarist John Perry to join them on writing a new album.

The Sisters of Mercy were the usual Sisters, and I'm getting a bit bored with them. That's ok when it comes to their 'Vision Thing'-era material, no doubt. But where's the wonderful spidery guitar-work from their first album? The atmospheric stuff? The answer is that because it sounds 'gothic', and Andrew Eldritch can't stand that tag,.

Opening with the driving two-part hymn "Dominion/Mother Russia," Sisters leader Andrew Eldritch (along with bassist Patricia Morrison) creates a black soundscape that is majestic and vast. While the earlier Sisters releases were noisy, sometimes harsh affairs, Floodland is filled with lush production (thanks to Meat Loaf writer/producer Jim Steinman and the New York Choral Society) and lyric imagery that is both scary and glorious.
